In 2023, our company embarked on a significant transition, migrating from our old core platform to develop a new mobile and desktop application from the ground up. This overhaul necessitated the creation of an entirely new design system.

Migrating off our core platform meant we could build everything from scratch. I worked side by side with our product and engineering teams to create components that flex to the complexities that come with banking experiences as well as react to device sizes ranging from desktop to the tenniest tiniest IPhone SE.

Like any design system, ours starts with the basics: typography, colors, breakpoints, spacing scales, and rules for each. From there, we create flexible components such as buttons, input fields, alerts, headers, footers, and more.

These components were designed hand-in-hand with the engineering and product team as we built full banking experiences so they were truly put to the test to see how flexible and scalable they could be, especially across devices. We audit components during each sprint and work collaboratively across teams to apply any updates.

A generic design system is one thing, a design system to fit the needs of bank is a whole 'nother beast. So far, the Jenius Design System is rich with styles, components, and documentation to empower our brand new built-from-scratch web app MVP.
Currently in progress: I've been walking in parallel with engineers and business stakeholders to learn and understand the behind the scenes of how banking features work, thus influencing what kind of components may be needed across the app. It is evolving everyday and it has been a joy to hit that "publish updates" button!
